Gender and class are increasingly salient dimensions of mobilisation, identity formation, and political contestation across the global far right. This panel examines the class and gendered dimensions of contemporary far right activism. In Australia, as in Europe and North America, far-right politics has seen an unprecedented surge in size and visibility, both in electoral manifestations like Pauline Hanson’s One Nation and in extra-parliamentary movements like the now-disbanded National Socialist Network. Despite the salience of class and gender to far-right discourses, symbolism, mobilisations and propaganda, these issues have been underexplored in Australian scholarship. This panel brings together scholars from political science, media and communications, and criminology to examine the intersections of class and gender across the heterogeneous Australian far right. Drawing on diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, the four papers included in this panel explore electoral and movement-based manifestations of gender and class politics, including highly localised mobilisations against LGBTQIA+ events in Victoria, the performance of working-class identity by Pauline Hanson, and the growth of online “tradwife” culture as both a reaction to capitalist modernity and a cornerstone of the contemporary neo-Nazi movement. In doing so, the panel moves from federal-level electoral politics to highlight localised community contestations, offering a cross-sectional view of how far-right gender and class politics operates across the political arena and the public sphere. Collectively, the panel advances our understanding of the role of gender and class politics in Australian far-right political projects.
