Peter Mayer Best Journal Article Prize

The Peter Mayer Best Journal Article Prize is awarded to the author(s) of the paper judged to be the best published in the Australian Journal of Political Science in the previous year.

Judging process

  1. A member of the APSA Executive will chair a judging panel of at least three people comprised of APSA members and at least one member of the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Political Science (AJPS). It will include a previous award winner where possible and appropriate. Members of these groups who are authors or co-authors of papers in the volume of AJPS under consideration will not be eligible to participate in the panel.
  2. Symposia, or parts of symposia, replies or rejoinders, research notes and book reviews are excluded from consideration.
  3. All members of the panel will be invited to nominate, by a set date, three eligible papers in order of merit. Papers will be awarded 3 points for each first preference, 2 points for each second preference and 1 point for each third preference.
  4. The winner of the prize will be determined by calculating the number of points awarded to each paper, where 3 points are given for each first preference, 2 for each second preference, and 1 point for each third preference. The paper scoring the most points wins the prize. In the event of a tie on this calculation, the prize will be awarded to the tied paper receiving most first preferences.
  5. The winner of the prize will be announced at Annual Conference. The prize of $1000 and a trophy will be awarded at the Conference dinner.
