From AUKUS to nuclear energy to nuclear waste, Australian citizens are confronted with the possibility of multiple types of new nuclear technology. This mixed-methods paper examines how Australia views “nuclear”: the sources from which people get their ideas about nuclear, the images and emotions they associate with nuclear, and how they feel about various types of nuclear technology being deployed in Australia. Using 2019 survey data, it provides a baseline for future work to see to what extent, and in what ways, trends have changed.
