Panel: Australia and the Changing International Order, 2021–2025 (ii)
This chapter examines Australia's human rights diplomacy during 2021–2025 amid a deteriorating global human rights environment and declining support for multilateralism. It argues that the Albanese Government strengthened Australia's international human rights engagement through new institutional initiatives, expanded diplomatic advocacy, and greater regional and multilateral cooperation. At the same time, Australia's international credibility continued to be constrained by persistent domestic human rights challenges, including Indigenous justice, asylum seeker policies, and the absence of a federal Human Rights Act. The chapter highlights both the achievements and the enduring tensions in Australia's human rights policy.
