Abstract

This study aimed to answer the question: Are educated middle-class electors in Bangladesh influenced by their religious ideology when they vote? To answer this question, we conducted a Qualtrics online survey and followed up with qualitative Zoom interviews. Among our study of educated, middle-class Bangladeshi electors, we found that religiosity did not impact their political attitudes; they preferred political candidates who evinced secular and democratic values over religious ones. In other words, their private religious convictions did not carry over into public electoral choices. Through in-depth interviews, the study also identified the reasons behind electors’ voting preferences.
