APSA LGBTQIA+ Caucus Panel: Queer Inclusions

Abstract

Over the last few decades, the LGBTQIA+ movement has gained greater visibility in local, national, and international politics. Liberal democratic countries like Australia have achieved new milestones in both LGBTQIA+ political representation as well as the advancement of LGBTQIA+ rights. While progress has been made, in recent years we have seen an intensifying backlash against LGBTQIA+ people and rights by transnational antidemocratic far-right forces. More broadly, far-right parties have capitalised on a wider cultural backlash against social and cultural liberalism, framing LGBTQIA+ rights and sexual pluralism as existential threats to the nation and to traditional moral values. Despite both unparalleled progress on and persistent backlash to LGBTQIA+ rights, queer politics is rarely examined in the discipline while queer approaches are rarely adopted. By centring queer politics and approaches, this panel not only confronts core issues in the politics discipline but also demonstrates how it can ultimately help explain—and resist—democratic backsliding.
