APSA T&L Group Workshop: AI and Digital Literacy in Teaching Political Studies – 11 and 12 September 2025

8 July, 2025

Call for papers

The Australian Political Studies Association (APSA) Teaching and Learning Group invites abstracts for an upcoming education workshop to explore what it means for political studies graduates to be ready for AI in the workplace. This workshop examines the growing role of AI in government and corporate decision-making, analysis and communications, and considers the implications for curriculum development in politics, public policy and international relations. The workshop will empower politics educators to integrate digital literacy and critical AI skills into their teaching, and share innovative teaching practices. The workshop will also focus on co-creating capability statements for curriculum development in the discipline, and developing a resource kit for classroom learning.

We invite papers that examine AI’s impact on policy and governance, and critical perspectives on AI use in the workplace, alongside presentations that showcase innovative teaching methods, assessment design on AI and data ethics for students. We are looking for both 15 minute papers and short 5 minute practice sharing presentations. Examples of broad topics could include:

  • explorations of AI use for policy analysis & research;
  • hands-on data visualizations for politics/IR/policy teaching;
  • teaching critical use of AI tools, including bias detection & explainability tests; and
  • designing AI & data ethics assessments for students.

This event will be held on 11-12 September 2025, at UNSW Sydney. There will be a public event on Thursday evening, and then a full day workshop on Friday for workshop participants to collaborate, learn, and shape the future of AI education in politics, IR, and public policy.

This workshop is supported by APSA, and some funding is available to support travel to Sydney for Education Focused academics (EFs) and Early Career Researchers (ECRs).

Submissions are due Friday 25 July and successful presenters will be notified the following week.

Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words and details should be submitted via the following portal:  https://forms.office.com/r/nerxX94yqH
